Happy 60th birthday to Roger “Syd” Barrett, founding guitarist, singer, songwriter, and soul of Pink Floyd. Syd was Pink Floyd in the same way that Brian Wilson was the Beach Boys. Brian triumphantly defeated his demons and returned to musical prominence years after his drug downfall. Syd may have defeated his demons (let’s hope so), but he is content to remain an amateur painter and private citizen in his hometown of Cambridge, England. Pink Floyd has never forgotten what Syd meant to them and if you are a fan of the 1970s and 1980s Floyd, then you owe Syd a debt of gratitude.
