Settling In..

October 24th, 2006

So, our stuff was delivered on Saturday and despite only a minor incident involving a missing bookcase, everything has arrived — most of which has been unpacked. I use the term “unpacked” loosely, however, because just because it’s no longer in a box doesn’t mean that it has found its final destination.

We have a mock-dining room table that has turned into a massive knick knack zone. There are various towels and other clothing bit strewn around the apartment and there is still nothing on the walls (including Naughty Betty).

We hope to get everything finished up this coming weekend, at which point I’ll gladly shoot a few photos and post them up for the world to see.

In other news…. Work is great. I started on Monday, and it’s been a great experience. It feels mostly like college, in that I’m in class all day in training sessions, but it’s still very interesting and a lot of fun. MP is enjoying her employment situation and things are going well for her as well. It’s also hard to dislike the 70+ degree weather we’ve been seeing the past week or so — so all-in-all things have been going very well.

Preparing for Work

October 22nd, 2006

As I prepare to start my first day at tomorrow, I can’t help but read this article from the Washington Post and get a huge smile on my face.

Thank you, Jenson!

October 20th, 2006

Last night, we get home from the movies only to find out that my friend “Jenson Wireless” needed to reset his router because it lost connection to the Internet. I was able to see all of the machines connected to the router, but was unable to get anywhere on the network. (Damn Jenson!) It was down all day today — until just now when we come home from an Santa Claraian adventure. [He must've called Comcast].

There about 20 wireless networks that I can see from various nooks and crannies of our new apartment, although Jenson Wireless is the only one without a password (fortunately). The movers are scheduled to arrive tomorrow between 8am and 9am, and Comcast is due to set up our connections sometime late in the day — so things should be stable from that point forward.

Tonight we actually took an adventure out to Trader Joe’s and In N Out Burger for dinner. I have to admit that there was some nice things at the Trader Joe’s in Sunnyvale, but it was tiny. The selection was very minimal and I think for our location, it’s best to shop over at Wholefoods — unless we’re in an area near a nicer TJ’s.

In case you’ve been wondering how we’ve been spending our time waiting for the movers, it’s been consisting mostly of various blogs, LOST (Season 2) and .

Fortunately our stuff arrives tomorrow and we’ll be one step closer to being settled. Hooray!

Confusion Illusion

October 20th, 2006

I am thoroughly confused about a couple of movies that are hitting cinemas this weekend, or may have already hit cinemas. I only moments ago found out that there are, in fact, two separate movies that appear to deal with magic, illusionists, black magic, and intrigue and both appear to be set in the 19th century. One is The Prestige and the other is The Illusionist. I am sure I will see neither, confusion or not. I remember seeing the trailer for one of these (can’t remember which one) about four to six weeks ago and it looked interesting. Then, a few weeks later, I saw a TV ad for it and the plot seemed hastily rearranged. And, wait a second, I thought, what happened to Christian Bale? How did they get Paul Giamatti to come in and take Bale’s place so fast? I was flabbergasted. I genuinely thought these two films were just one film and I thought that Bale and Hugh Jackman had been edited out of the film and Giamatti and Edward Norton had filled in somehow at the eleventh hour.

I was intrigued. It blew my mind how quickly Hollywood had changed the entire movie and created a new one. Now that I know I had merely confused two very similar-looking films, I’m much less interested. However, I will be keeping an eye on how these films do at the box office, and I’ll probably check out some reviews. Afterall, there is still the confusion over releasing two black magic period pieces in the same month.

Overpopulation Nation

October 18th, 2006

Yesterday, the U.S. population hit 300 million. That’s a lot of zeros. It’s sadly odd how cities all over the country are promoting their 7:46 am baby as the 300 millionth baby. What an arbitrary honor to want to affix to a newborn. We also found out that the U.S. Census Bureau predicts that the U.S. population will hit 400 million by 2043. That’s just 37 years from now. We just just hit 300 million and we’re going to grow by one-third in 37 short years. That shocks me. That worries me. I’ll most likely still be walking this mortal coil in 37 years, but I’ll be an old man and I’m not too concerned with the status of earth in my lifetime; well, I am, but I’m fairly confident my quality of life will be pretty much the same in 37 years.

I am, however, concerned about leaving this world in livable and sustainable shape for future generations. Will there be enough food? Enough oxygen? Enough farmland? Enough farmers willing to work that farmland to provide all the food? I worry that our natural resources are running out and we might not be able to fix the problem in time. I struggle with the thought of bringing children into this world and telling them, Hey, it’s your problem now. I’m outta here. Good luck! But, then again, 18 months ago I wrote right here that I would never get married. So what do I know?

Apartment Photos Available

October 18th, 2006

Somehow I was able to gather up enough wireless signal to post the photos to . I haven’t taken any pics from outside the complex yet — and these are only photos of our unfurnished apartment.

The movers are expected to arrive Saturday with all of our goods. After we get it set up and organized there will be more photos.

Somewhat Situated

October 18th, 2006

First off, I realized that my posts are all going to be made in Eastern Time because that is the way that I have the site set up.. so while it is only 11:00p in California, my timestamp is going to read 2:00am for the many readers of The Diatribe. So it goes.

In any event, we landed yesterday afternoon — picked up our rental car, renter’s insurance and made it over to our new apartment complex in time to sign the lease and get the keys to our new place. We’ve even managed to make a few runs to Target, Bed Bath and Beyond as well as Linen’s N Things to pick up some necessary items before the movers arrive on Saturday.
