Okay, I need vast amounts of audience interaction on this one. Let’s make this the most trafficked, most commented post in Diatribe history. This started out as an innocent, yet intriguing question to my man Petro this morning, then I asked my man Bubba, and now I bring the question to your table…
You have 3 fantasy tickets to see any 3 musical acts ever. Who will they be?
My choices were easy to come up with, using my gut instincts. But if I had given it some thought, my list would be in the hundreds by now. Here’s my top 3 at the moment…
* The Doors – 1966, when they were playing their very early gigs at LA’s Whiskey A-Go-Go.
* The Beach Boys – any 1966-1972 gigs that Brian Wilson joined the band (rare occurrences).
* Ludwig van Beethoven – anytime, because that must have been freaking awesome even though I don’t even really like classical music much.

Wow.. great question.. let me think about this.
I’d have to go with…
Mozart -Again, a cool person to see anytime..
The The – Late 80′s, Early 90′s. Though not extremely popular, The The’s front man Johnny Marr was the lead singer of The Smiths in the early 80′s.
Led Zepplin – Sometime ago.
This was tough. I’m not a huge fan of Classic Rock or “Oldies” which is what this list implies, really. A lot of the music I like is still around.. I only put Led Zepplin because I think it’d be fun to see them.. but if I had a choice between Led Zepplin (if they prime today) and Primus or Ween … I’d probably take Primus or Ween over Led Zepplin anyday.
Johnny Marr was actually the lead guitarist and co-songwriter (along with Morrissey) in The Smiths. And now that you mention it, on some days, The Smiths would make my list. On other days, I’d substitute The Police for Beethoven. Sorry, Luddy!
Ok here are mine…
- Led Zeppelin
- The Doors
- Miles Davis w/ Thelonious Monk
It’s hard to only pick 3 though!
This is what I envision Heaven to be like. You wake up and say to yourself, “hmmm…who should I go see first, Zeppelin live at Earl’s Court in ’75 or The Beatles’ rooftop concert in 1969? I guess I check them both out and then head over to Woodstock ’69.”
Woodstock ’69? Sorry Cool Jesus, there was only a Woodstock ’94 and ’99. ’69… dude, you’re just not thinking.
CJ – Morrissey? Never ‘eard of ‘im.
I should first mention that if I ever encountered the opportunity to ride the ribbon of time and catch Zepplin live, I would jump on it faster than John Bonham could down a fifth of JD. However, for purposes of these fantasy tickets I’m going to leave them off. Mine are:
1.) Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble
2.) Hendrix
3.) Wes Montgomery (famed jazz guitarist)
Musical heaven for me would be these guitar gods exchanging licks for eternity. You throw in a backing ryhthm section of Bonham on drums and Jaco Pastorius on bass and that is one magical jam session.

LTJ, you’re kidding…right?
As I’ve mentioned before, 99% of my clearest thoughts come while in the shower (this should explain to all you smartasses why my routine takes so damn long). This morning was no exception. I was thinking about this fantasy ticket question and it dawned on me that this idea has been in my head for over nine years. When I was taking a required computer class in college, an assignment was to create a handbill for a concert featuring any three musical acts of my choosing. I remember Captain Larby viewing my choices with a snicker. At that time, I reined myself in by choosing contemporary acts. I think I chose Stone Temple Pilots, Beastie Boys, and The Cranberries. Okay, you can stop laughing now.
LTJ-I’m with CJ. I hope that sarcasm.
I agree with LTJ – Mozart defiantely tops my list!
Next it would have to be Neil Diamond – over and over again, he can “Play me” anytime
and last but certainly not least Michael Crawford. I had one opportunity to see him and he was so amazing I actually cried when it was over.
Mrs. Larby, so you’re the one who went to see ‘Saving Silverman’ at the theater, eh?
