I’ve been trying to seek out an idea for a participatory post from the audience, and I think I came up with one. What was the best & worst movie you’ve seen recently. I’m not asking for your all-time greatest or anything. It’s more like, what was the most recent movie that you really enjoyed. And on the flip side, what’s the movie that you recently watched and particularly disliked.
There’s often a large number of films that fall in between these two categories and just entertain — I’m looking for the extremes. Here are mine:
Enjoyed:
I actually have two:
"The Aristocrats" — Not for the faint of heart.
"Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang" — A surprisingly clever comedy that I particularly enjoyed.
Disliked:
"Lady in the Water" — Horrible. I typically like M. Night’s movies.. this one, however, was a waste of my time. I want my 110 minutes back.
What are your recent faves?

Enjoyed:
Lady in the Water – I often like to pretend the sky in my world is full of vivid and wonderful colors, so this movie definitely satisfied my whimsical side. I thought it was sweet and simple without being overly hyped.
Little Miss Sunshine – I liked the normality of the family in this movie. Each character was eccentric but in a totally believable and very likeable way. With the exception of the grandpa out the window scene, it was like watching a day in the life of the Scalias!
Disliked:
Kingdom of Heaven – Even though I saw this a good many months ago, I am still reeling from the bad acting, bad dialogue, bad sets, bad writing, ect. Not even the luscious Orlando Bloom could have save this movie!
Enjoyed:
‘The Departed’ – It was just cool to see such a great ensemble plying its trade in my fair city. Plus, local boys Matt Damon and Mark Wahlberg shined as bright as anyone. I know that Scorcese shot a good deal of the movie in New York, but that’s not his fault. That’s just because the f–ks on Beacon Hill really try to squeeze every last dime out of a filmmaker.
Disliked:
‘The Messengers’ – Swedish Girl, being a horror movie fan, really wanted to see this one and I was also intrigued. However, it wasn’t until we sat down in the cinema that she mentioned how this was only rated PG-13. I had a sinking feeling right then that I would be disappointed. And I was. Oh yes. No punch. No originality. Ripped off vignettes from many other much better thrillers. And worst of all, the Prang Brothers used that cheap haunted house routine of scaring the viewer with sharp, unexpected noises and images racing by. For shame!
Enjoyed:
Windy City Heat: Watch it, if you can find it. It was a comedy central movie from a while ago that has been released on DVD a few months ago. It’s about a group of friends tricking some poor guy into thinking he got a lead role in a hollywood movie. Hilarious. One of my fav’s of all time because of how original it is, and because I think it is 100% real.
Disliked:
Saw III: I expected so much more from it. Saw, the first one, was one of the best horror movies ever, because of the well thought through plot. Torture, blood and breaking bones is not typically a call for a ‘great movie’, but it was a great horror flick. Saw III, on the other hand, I hoped would take over from a subpar Saw II. It did, but I was hoping it would give Saw a run for its money, and it didn’t. With that said, still a great series.
I know I’m behind the 8-ball on this one, but anyways:
Liked:
I really enjoyed Pan’s Labyrinth. Great movie. I like fantasy movies.
I didn’t think Lady int he Water was all that great, but I didn’t hate it as much as LTJ. I knew it was supposed to be fantastical so the over the topness of it didn’t bother me as much as him.
Cold Mountain. Good plot. Good acting.
Disliked:
I fell asleep to the Aristocrats. Avoid this if you don’t want to hear the same joke repeated in increasingly disgusting detail over and over.
