Twitter

Can someone please explain to me the purpose of ? I see a ton of coverage on the novelty of this new system, and I’ve heard about several implementations of twitter-specific technology tied to iPhone applications.

It seems like a micro blog geared towards adolescent teenagers with too much time on their hands, and too many text messages to send.

“Twitter is on its way to becoming the next killer app.”
- TIME Magazine

“It’s one of the fastest-growing phenomena on the Internet.”
- New York Times

“Suddenly, it seems as though all the world’s a-twitter.”
- Newsweek

Can someone please explain to me the value of twitter?

Well, it’s my job to figure it out. I’ve seen several posts on various sites like LifeHacker talking about increased productivity by using a ‘command line tool’ like Twitter.

What I’ve found is that the key advantage to having twitter and using a twitter account is not in the messages that you post about yourself, but rather the ability to send messages to a different user. In these cases, a different user would be Google Calendar, Remember The Milk, and othes where your short ‘direct message’ is a way to communicate with that application and update your account there.

So, you can update your Google calendar from your cell phone?

if you aren’t tied to google calendar or remember the milk (which I’d never heard of) what else does it interface with? is there a list?

It also interfaces with http://dopointoh.com, a todo list site that I like.

Here’s a site that lists other bots: http://retweet.com

The real value I’ve found is passively keeping in touch with far away friends. They post throughout the day and it’s as if I have a sense of their presence. I know, that’s kind of mushy but some of my favorite people are not geographically nearby.
