My First Gadget

February 25th, 2008

I decided that it was about time that I taught myself how to create Google Gadgets. I work with them here and there for my job, but I also wanted to see what they’re all about. I’ve heard from plenty of people how fun they are to make (and I have to agree). It’s a pretty cool API and I think they’re fairly extensible.

I figured my first gadget should be something for The Diatribe. So, I created a customizable gadget that can sit on you iGoogle page showing the most recent headlines from The Diatribe. You can also create a customizable icon of your favorite Diatribe author.

To add the gadget to your iGoogle homepage, click the button below (or the new link on the right hand sidebar). Let me know what you think.. suggestions are welcome!

Add it to iGoogle:

Worst Ad Format — Ever

January 25th, 2008

As someone who has worked in online advertising for over 6 years, I can say that this type of ad format is the worst i’ve ever seen.

Pay Per Play Audio Ads — meaning, a 5 second audio ad will play when you get to a site.

Uhh.. Please, publishers, don’t do this to us.

Nostalgia

December 14th, 2007

From time to time, one thing I enjoy doing is going into and searching for places that I visited, lived or enjoyed. For example, searching for:

Reims, I can view all of the photos of Le Place D’Erlon, Notre Dame de Reims, and the other places that I remember visiting when I lived there in 1998.

or try searching for your High School and see what you get.

It’s a fun trip down memory lane. Unfortunately for Miss Possible, ‘The Bench‘ turns up too many results to sift through.

Greenpeace has accepted the viral nature of the Mr. Splashy Pants Voting and has started to promote the facebook group supporting the fun-named whale. They’ve created banners, songs, t-shirts, pins and even touted a specialized logo on the popular news site .

Looks like the whale is making waves across the internet.

I heart WordPress

Have I ever mentioned how much I like the WordPress platform? It’s really a remarkable blogging / page management Content Management System.

It’s so extensible that you can pretty much find some kind of plugin (or make one) to do what you want. There’s so much documentation and help available as well, that it makes learning the system pretty painless. Granted, I’ve never written plugin or anything, but I’ve found my way through some PHP goodness to get what I need to out of the system.

But what’s better, is that just tonight I was able to install the new WPhone Plugin which allows you to easily access your blog’s admin pages using your iPhone. It’s nearly perfect — and now I can blog from anywhere.

Watch out, Diatribers.. I’m Mob-blogging now!

A Sociable Social Networking Site

October 10th, 2007

I have to thank my co-workers Becca and Heba for getting me to sign up for late last year while we were working in what we lovingly call “the dungeon.” I never really paid much attention to my Facebook profile, but I realized instantly that I liked it more than .

Over the past several months, I’ve acquired several friends and joined a few groups. And just recently, Facebook announced a new feature called “Applications” — which lets anyone develop third party applications that can be embedded within your profile. Some are as simple as a better way to send messages to your friends, others are movie quizzes (to share & rank your movie trivia knowledge w/ your friends) and then there’s the Red Sox Nation app, that lets you show your support and move up the ranks of the “Red Sox Organization” as you cheer and encourage other users to sign up for the application.

Facebook is clean. Facebook is useable. Facebook is Fun. These are three distinct features that MySpace does not have. Myspace is the World Wide Web of 1997, with flashing backgrounds, images, and horrible background music. I mean seriously, can you please tell me how these two sites are different: MySpace and The World’s Worst Web Page.

So, I’m happy to say that in a few short weeks I’ll be retiring my MySpace profile. Not completely, however, but more simply I’ll be removing all my personal information and replacing it with a single link:
Stop The Insanity. Look for me on Facebook.com.

The Pulse

Well, wouldja look at this neat little site. It’s called and it was developed and owned by a division of Nielson known as .

While I’m not totally clear on how it works, it’s a very cool way to track trends and fads that occur in the blogging community. Take for example, this “featured” trend that compares the blog posts relating to birth vs. death vs. marriage vs. taxes. What’s interesting is that death leads the overall category, however, for some strange reason there was a spike in marriage at the beginning of June. Strange.
