The Google Guy

September 1st, 2007

If you’ve been with me to the Googleplex, you’ve likely seen Tan Chade-Meng’s photo wall on my abbreviated tour of the campus. There’s actually a very nice article about the tradition in Today’s New York Times.

If you don’t have time for the article, here’s a link to his on Picasaweb.

So, about this city of angels…

August 17th, 2007

I got back last night, just in time to take Miss Possible to the airport for a trip back to the East Coast for weekend full of baby showers, hoping that she doesn’t get any funny ideas. I spent just about a day and a half in Los Angeles, and that was more than enough time for me.

Business aside, the city itself was interesting, to say the least. We booked our hotel online at a place called , on Wilshire just blocks from the famed Rodeo Drive in a lovely area known as Beverly Hills. Looking at the photos online, we were thrilled to be in such a luxury hotel in such a great area of the city.

One of my co-workers brought his Tom-Tom (or as we called her Luella) Portable Navigator so that we were able to get around the city without much need for directions. As we were coming down Wilshire, we heard Luella say “100 yards to your destination” — but all we saw was an ugly brick building covered with scaffolding. As we pulled into the Hotel Garage, we began to get very nervous as it served several purposes at once: Garage/Valet Drop, Hotel Lobby, Registration Desk.

As we pulled up the sound of drilling and jackhammers was so loud you could barely hear yourself think. It made for a very bad first impression.

Just finishing up..

July 30th, 2007

While Cool Jesus was out partying the night away with The Police, MP and I were busy cleaning up our apartment. It’s done… finally. We’ve had a number of delays and weekend activities that have prevented us from putting the finishing touches on our new abode, but we were finally able to do it this weekend.

With the help of a little we’re done and I present the photos, courtesy of Flickr.

Operation Move: Complete

July 9th, 2007

It has been a chaotic couple of days. It all began on Friday night with a forray of boxes and cleaning supplies strewn around the apartment and continued throughout the entire weekend. The movers were extremely prompt, and I’d highly encourage anyone living in the South Bay Area to use as they quoted us with 3 hours to pack and 3 hours to unpack. They arrived at 8:20 and by 10:15 we were off to our new Apartment.

The biggest complication of the weekend was the layout of the living room (floor plan 3). Trying to figure out how to arrange everything in an orderly fashion, with the dining room table was no easy task. It didn’t have the clearly defined dining room area that Alderwood had. We managed and were able to set most of the major items up by Saturday evening.

We finished off the kitchen, living room and bedroom yesterday — leaving the guest bedroom / office for another day — and decided to head over to Alderwood to put the finishing touches on the apt. As soon as we walked in, we realized how much nicer our new place is. I even said to MP Saturday night as we strolled around our new complex with Bogart, that I felt like we were living in a resort. It’s really gorgeous, and we really would not have been here if it wasn’t for MP’s work ethic, dedication and mad computer programming skillz.

I’ll have pictures once we get everything set up.. we’re still in Moving Box Hell.

Our Pre-Anniversary

July 5th, 2007

One year from Today, and Miss Possible and I will be getting married. It’s a very strange notion to think that exactly one year from now.. we will be married. We even struggled to comprehend this fact last night, while watching the Santa Clara fireworks display. At first we slipped, wondering where the Los Gatos fireworks display would be held — and how it would compare to that of Santa Clara’s. We then realized that it’d be at least 2 years before we were able to answer that question — as next year we’ll be in Massachusetts.

A very strange notion indeed.

Catching Up

June 28th, 2007

A lot has happened over the past few weeks, so let’s take a moment to catch up.

Miss Possible has a new job. Starting in mid July, she’ll be working for a new California-based company that will remain nameless for the time being. If she gives me the appropriate permissions to name it publicly, I will do so. To coincide with this job change, we’ve decided to change our location as well. We’re moving to Los Gatos.

It’s not far, maybe about 20 minutes south of Santa Clara, but we’re excited to move to a much nicer apartment complex. We’re officially moving July 7th, so until that time we’ll be busy little bees packing up boxes and making sure that little Bogart does eat anything he’s not supposed to. In our first day of packing, he already managed to chomp up a CD and chew up a box. We just hoping he doesn’t find the packing paper.

In upcoming news.. can we talk about the for a second? There’s not one bad review of this guy out there anywhere. If anyone is getting a bad rap, it’s . I even mentioned to MP tonight that it was important that we figure out a way for her to join Cingular without forcing me to sign a new two-year contract, so that I can purchase one of these bad boys in a few months. She called me crazy. I told her that disrespecting the iPhone is like disrespecting my family. She wasn’t amused.

So, with the move, the wedding, and everything else going on.. I’m obviously not going to be first in line to snatch up one of these great new products. That’s ok, though.. I won’t be far behind.. Remember v1.0 of the iPod? Well.. 2.0 was much better . It might even be integrated into Cingular’s 3G network at that point, in which case, it’s worth the wait.

So, that’s the news.. I’ve been trying to post at least once a week, but I’ll obviously need to try harder if I want to keep my beloved readers satisfied. So, stay tuned. More to come as we explore our new town of Los Gatos, or as I’ve been calling it “The Cats.”

Times must be tough

April 23rd, 2007

I remember when ‘The Dollar Store’ concept first came into being when I was a kid. It seemed like such a great concept — tons of crap, all for $1. My sister and I happened to be walking be a ‘dollar store’, where the sign reads ‘Almost Everything for $1.25.’ We were shocked.. what’s become of the Dollar Store, that they needed to raise the prices to $1.25.

Well, the madness doesn’t stop there. Seven days later, Miss Possible and I were going to the grocery store and we walked by the very same ‘Dollar Store.’ This time, the sign read ‘Almost Everything for $1.37.’ What a ridiculous number. We decide to go into the store to see if we can find any cheapo-goodies, and over heard this conversation:

Woman: So how much is this?
Clerk: One Dollar & Thirty-Seven Cents
Woman: Hmm.. And how much is this?
Clerk: One Dollar & Thirty-Seven Cents, nearly everything is $1.37.
Woman: Why? I thought everything was $1.25.
Clerk: That was last week, this week nearly everything is $1.37.
Woman: So… how much is this?

At this point we were no longer within earshot of the conversation, but I’m sure it continued on for some time. I tell ya, you know times are tough when a store needs to mark up its prices nearly an extra 10%. Go figure.
