Times must be tough

April 23rd, 2007

I remember when ‘The Dollar Store’ concept first came into being when I was a kid. It seemed like such a great concept — tons of crap, all for $1. My sister and I happened to be walking be a ‘dollar store’, where the sign reads ‘Almost Everything for $1.25.’ We were shocked.. what’s become of the Dollar Store, that they needed to raise the prices to $1.25.

Well, the madness doesn’t stop there. Seven days later, Miss Possible and I were going to the grocery store and we walked by the very same ‘Dollar Store.’ This time, the sign read ‘Almost Everything for $1.37.’ What a ridiculous number. We decide to go into the store to see if we can find any cheapo-goodies, and over heard this conversation:

Woman: So how much is this?
Clerk: One Dollar & Thirty-Seven Cents
Woman: Hmm.. And how much is this?
Clerk: One Dollar & Thirty-Seven Cents, nearly everything is $1.37.
Woman: Why? I thought everything was $1.25.
Clerk: That was last week, this week nearly everything is $1.37.
Woman: So… how much is this?

At this point we were no longer within earshot of the conversation, but I’m sure it continued on for some time. I tell ya, you know times are tough when a store needs to mark up its prices nearly an extra 10%. Go figure.

Gonna Get In The Hot Tub

April 1st, 2007

Despite living in California for about 6 months, tonight was our first adventure into the hot tub. We were very exciting about the amenity when we were planning our relocation to Cali, but for some reason we never took advantage of it until tonight — and it was just as lovely as we could have imagined and something we will certainly be taking advantage of more frequently!!

I figured I’d be more than gracious enough to give you guys a glimpse of our celebrity lives out here in Santa Clara and have provided for you a video of our hot tub extravaganza. Enjoy!

Giant Garbage Day

March 22nd, 2007

It’s not the official name of the holiday, but it should be. Every year, the city of Santa Clara, holds what they call and Miss Possible and I were totally confused by this strange ritual.

It all started last Saturday night, as we’re driving back from seeing , when we noticed that nearly every house in our neighborhood had a giant pile of trash at the curb and I’m not talking typical garbage. I’m talking Mattresses, Dressers, Refrigerators, Couches, Huge piles of Lawn Junk, Wooden Planks, you name it and you could find it on the street. It was a dumpster diver’s paradise (and trust me, there were plenty of scavangers on the prowl).

Basically, the way it works in California, is if you have a large item that you need to dispose of, you’re required to take it to the city dump — except on ‘Giant Garbage Day.’ Often, you need to pay to have the dump take your trash. Thus the reason behind the holiday’s popularity. People will hold on to stuff for an entire year in order to dispose of it for free at the city’s expense. One friend told me that, as a kid, he used to despise ‘Giant Trash Day’ because his grandfather would make him help clean the closets, basement & garage rooting for large items stashed throughout the year waiting for just this weekend.

As the week went on, I noticed the piles grew steadily larger. It actually became somewhat of a problem for the city, because according to the web site:

“A Clean-Up Campaign map is no longer available on the website due to concern that it is contributing to illegal dumping during the campaign by non-residents of Santa Clara.”

The piles were obviously getting out of control, and the city realized it. I had never seen or heard of such a thing until I spoke to a few of my co-workers explained the laws surrounding California trash pickup. For instance, did you know that it is illegal to throw out batteries in the State of California? They must be recycled. Who knew?

In any event, Miss Possible and I were unprepared for the holiday and will have to mark it in our calendars for next year. I don’t think we really had anything to contribute this year, but you’d better believe that we’ll be saving up our goodies to take part in next year’s festivities.

Dodgeball on Trampolines

February 21st, 2007

Who knew? Who ever thought of this is an absolute genius. This was our recent off-site for our department . And let me just say, it’s as fun as it looks.

There are three rooms — a giant trampoline room, a trampoline room setup as a dodgeball court, and a trampoline room with a giant pool of foam squares that you dive into.

Having this place all to ourselves, with 150 or so co-workers was beyond entertaining. Needless to say there were a number of injuries (sprained ankles, skinned knees & elbows, etc.). Nobody really escaped unscathed. If you ask anyone, though — it was worth it.

Weather..

January 31st, 2007

It’s about time. It’s finally becoming more seasonable (read: Damn Global Warming). After departing the Northeast, I was eager to enjoy the warm californian winters while the Northeast froze.. but it wasn’t until recently that the mercury has begun to fall in New York & Boston while maintaining a balmy 60 degrees here in the Silicon Valley.

Most of the New York and Boston areas enjoyed lovely weather right up until the last week of January or so, when winter has finally set in. There were points in December & January where it was even warmer back home than it was in lovely California. Some folks out here have been pretty disappointed in the crummy winter we’ve had. I mean, it’s dipped into the 30′s three times now.

So, while it’s true that it has been a little colder than normal in the Golden State, it’s definitely a nice change. Especially when I typically galavant around in just a fleece or a hooded sweatshirt. I’m also starting to develop that “Boy, I’m glad I’m not in Boston” mentality, when I look at my Google Homepage.

That being said, if you’re looking for a break in the winter weather.. you know you’ve always got a place in CA to visit.

New Photos

October 31st, 2006

Just the other night, MP and I took a few photos of our apartment to put up online. Things aren’t 100% completed yet, but we basically just need to put up some decorations and wall art.

In any event, the photos can be found in my set on Flickr. Check them out if you’re interested.

More to come, I’m sure…

Thank you, Jenson!

October 20th, 2006

Last night, we get home from the movies only to find out that my friend “Jenson Wireless” needed to reset his router because it lost connection to the Internet. I was able to see all of the machines connected to the router, but was unable to get anywhere on the network. (Damn Jenson!) It was down all day today — until just now when we come home from an Santa Claraian adventure. [He must've called Comcast].

There about 20 wireless networks that I can see from various nooks and crannies of our new apartment, although Jenson Wireless is the only one without a password (fortunately). The movers are scheduled to arrive tomorrow between 8am and 9am, and Comcast is due to set up our connections sometime late in the day — so things should be stable from that point forward.

Tonight we actually took an adventure out to Trader Joe’s and In N Out Burger for dinner. I have to admit that there was some nice things at the Trader Joe’s in Sunnyvale, but it was tiny. The selection was very minimal and I think for our location, it’s best to shop over at Wholefoods — unless we’re in an area near a nicer TJ’s.

In case you’ve been wondering how we’ve been spending our time waiting for the movers, it’s been consisting mostly of various blogs, LOST (Season 2) and .

Fortunately our stuff arrives tomorrow and we’ll be one step closer to being settled. Hooray!
